Vintage Rug Care Guide
A hand-knotted wool rug has already lived for decades — with light care, it will easily outlive most modern rugs.
Everyday Care
- Vacuum gently. Use suction only — turn off the beater bar/rotating brush, which pulls at vintage pile. Vacuum in the direction of the pile.
- Rotate twice a year. This evens out sunlight and foot traffic, keeping wear and color balanced.
- Use a rug pad. It prevents slipping, protects the foundation, and makes low-pile rugs feel fuller.
- Mind direct sun. Vintage colors are already beautifully mellowed; constant harsh sun will keep fading them.
Spills & Stains
- Act fast: blot (never rub) with a clean, dry white cloth, working from the edge of the spill inward.
- For sticky residue, use a cloth dampened with cold water only. Avoid soaps and carpet shampoos — they can strip natural dyes.
- For serious stains, go straight to a professional rug cleaner who works with hand-knotted wool.
Deep Cleaning
Every few years, have the rug professionally hand-washed. Avoid steam cleaning and machine washing — high heat and agitation damage wool and natural dyes.
Storage
If you need to store your rug: clean it first, roll it (never fold) with the pile facing in, wrap it in breathable cotton — not plastic — and keep it somewhere dry.
